hospitals and schools.’ Once he hears that, he will stop crying
and finish his meal obediently.”
I couldn’t help but ask this child, “What was your
commissioner number?" Although he couldn’t answer my
question, in my heart, I knew that he had returned this world to
fulfill his vows.
The greatest suffering in life comes from illness. If a patient
is ill but the doctors cannot find the cause of the illness, trying
to determine the correct diagnosis and deciding on the course
of treatment may take a long time. During this time, the patient
may find it difficult to withstand the pain. If we want to quickly
relieve the suffering of these patients, we need well-educated
physicians who can identify the cause of the illnesses and
prescribe the right treatments accordingly. Therefore, doctors
need to constantly work on clinical training and research.
Tzu Chi University is very fortunate to have so many selfless
and loving silent mentors. We also call them “Body-Giving
Bodhisattvas.” They donated their bodies so that medical
students have real human bodies to practice on and learn from
in their anatomy classes and so that doctors can investigate the
causes of illnesses. Their hope is to give them a complete clinical
education and enhance their skills.
I’m grateful for these Body-Giving Bodhisattvas’ families and
their support. When I see their sorrow, whether they are loving
