Looking after others as if taking care of her own
family

Teacher Yueh-Mei Chen Huang was born at Qiaotou District,
Kaohsiung. Her father operated an herbal medicine store and often
helped those in need, so she learned the essence of compassion from
him. After getting married, as the eldest daughter-in-law, she helped
manage the family’s small department store and took good care of
her three children, especially when her husband went to Japan to
pursue his studies on a government scholarship. Teacher Chen Huang
encountered Tzu Chi in early 1980s. She and her husband helped to
raise funds for building Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital, participated actively
in Tzu Chi’s four missions, and attended to other’s needs for 37 years.
Tzu Chi’s founder Dharma Master Cheng Yen expected Teacher Chen
Huang to love others as if she were looking after her parents, which
she did. Before her passing, Teacher Chen Huang decided to follow
in her husband’s footsteps to become a Silent Mentor and gave
unselfishly to medical education. 7 7 7
